Rhys-Tom competes in round four of the NKC in Glan Y Gors

Round four of the NKC (National Karting Championship) was located at GYG Karting. This was Rhys-Tom's third time competing in the Senior Rotax class and his first time competing at the GYG Karting Circuit.

Rhys-Tom attended Saturday practice and he needed to learn the track quickly if he wanted to have a good chance of competing for a good result on Sunday’s race. Overall, the day went smoothly and Rhys-Tom was happy on his overall pace ahead of Sunday.

“Today was a great day at GYG and It’s great to be racing in Wales for the first time in this championship. I’ve learnt all the most important parts that needed to be learnt on the track and I hope I can convert the pace I had today into a top 10 result for tomorrow’s race”

Race day arrived and Rhys-Tom was ready for qualifying.

The session didn’t go as planned for Rhys-Tom due to a engine problem that slowed him down during the whole of the session. He qualified in a less than ideal 18th place on the grid ahead of heat 1.

When Rhys-Tom lined up on the grid he had changed his setup on his kart and wanted to test if this setup would positively influence his race pace. He started 18th and came in at the end of the session in21st place.

“This is going from bad to worse at the moment, the kart felt much better but I was not able to break free from the train of karts in front of me because I was being held up every lap”

Heat 2 was much better for Rhys-Tom as he managed to make his way up to 16th place at the end of the session. The kart was setup much better for the pre-final than what it was for qualifying at the start of the day which was disappointing. The best thing that Rhys-Tom could take out of this session was that he gained 5 positions during the race ready for the final.

The final saw Rhys-Tom gain only one position due to the start he had. This was definitely a positive for Rhys-Tom as he was able to recover his position by climbing up through the field to get a respectable 15thplace in the final.

Rhys-Tom’s final verdict for the day

“Overall, it’s been a great experience at GYG and its great to be back racing again. I’ve definitely learned how important Qualifying is today more than anything else I’ve learned during this weekend. The kart was getting better by the session and that was really shown by then lap times and the consistency of my driving”
